Charcoal has been produced as far back as 30,000 BC, but modern appetites have had environmental consequences in terms of deforestation of tree species which can take up to a century to regrow before they can be re-harvested.
So back in 2003 we looked for a more sustainable alternative and we discovered ‘Encroachment Bush’ in Namibia. These fast growing trees produce a vastly superior charcoal as well as assisting in keeping local farmlands free of this highly invasive species so local communities can continue to farm the lands and the natural habitat for indigenous animals is maintained.
Not only is this kind of harvesting highly sustainable, it also helps maintain the natural grass lands and savanna for farming and wildlife by combatting the rapid spread of the ‘encroachment bush’ which otherwise leaves the land completely unusable.
